The future of automotive headlights.

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Everyone is saying that LED tech is the future of automotive lighting and will soon be adapted to provide lighting for headlights, foglights, running lights, etc.  I beg to differ.

Introducing Luxim’s Plasma Light Bulb.  The size of a typical LED, Luxim’s Plasma bulb is double layered with the inner layer filled with argon gas.  Very similar to Xenon/HID technology used today but about the 10th the size.  Where it differs the most to current HID technology is how that electrical energy is delivered to the bulb.  Using what’s known as a Puck, which is basically an electrical lens, they can concentrate the electrical energy to the bulb, heat up the Argon gas which turns it into plasma and thus emits a bright light.  However, this energy delivery is effeciently converted to light energy rather than heat energy.  Luxim’s Plasma bulb can generate 140 lumens per watt vs. the latest LED tech which can “only” deliver 70 lumens per watt.

CNET has a video demonstrating the brightness and efficiency of Luxim’s Plasma bulb.  Have a look!

Merry Xmas everyone!  It’s been a while since I posted.  Well, I just recently ran into a good bit of information on motor oils.  I figure this would be something good to have and share.  Enjoy!
